The most trendy yet traditional part of the saying, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue (and a sixpence for your shoe)” is definitely a bride’s “something blue.” The meaning behind a blue token for the bride-to-be is said to represent purity, love and fidelity, according to the Knot. From jewelry (Princess Diana or Duchess Catherine ring a bell?) to fabric and flowers, many brides have taken the traditional item and made it trendy over the years. Here are a few “something blue” ideas for your special day.

Brides who want to stick with tradition should look at these items: 

• A blue garter
• Carry a bouquet of blue hydrangeas
• A piece of jewelry – old, new, or borrowed, you can’t go wrong with a beautiful sapphire, blue diamond or blue topaz piece of jewelry
• Ribbon – For a no-fuss “something blue” idea, have the fabric sewn into your dress or wrapped around your bouquet

For the contemporary bride, here are a few trends to try:

• Blue shoes – think Carrie Bradshaw’s Manolo Blahniks from Sex and the City. If you can’t afford a pair of high-end designer shoes, you could always attach blue decals on the bottom of your heels.
• Rock a blue manicure or pedicure – If you don’t want to wear blue an all ten fingers or toes, consider painting your ring finger in a sparkly hue as an accent color.
